Employers are from Mars, Schools are from Venus: Making Employer Engagement Worthwhile

One of the most time-consuming aspects of being a careers leader (if done well) is ensuring that there is a sufficient flow of employer and HE/FE engagements taking place in your school.  As if that wasn’t difficult enough you need to make sure they are meaningful and of good quality, on top of ensuring every child receives at least one engagement each year of their secondary career. Phew, there aren’t enough hours in the day!

To be frank, the initial effort in putting together a network of employer/HE/FE contacts is huge, but it pays off in the long run and becomes less onerous as time goes on.  Here are my tips, gleaned from many years delivering CEIAG in schools.

Engaging with the emotional content of career guidance

Career guidance has for a number of years been firmly established as a ‘learning’ activity rather than as ‘therapy’. Well respected academics such as Tony Watts and Tristram Hooley have long argued that one of the principle benefits of career guidance is the educational support it offers individuals to learn about work, education and leisure, allowing individual aspiration to be realised and inequality of opportunity to be addressed. As any career development professional will testify however, helping people sift and access career-related opportunities is rarely a 100% rational, calm and collected process.
